Two Sentence Tuesday #40

            “I’m not sure what’s real, anymore,” Kara moaned, desperate for something to cling to.

            A familiar kiss had unexpectedly found her beyond the veil of her lament and the voice connected to those lips whispered, “That… was real.”

Oneiromancy

Oneiromancy (The Surprise Party)

February’s final days had diminished
And I dreamt apocalyptic dreams
Of hellfire threads weaving infernal
Tapestries throughout perpetually
Unbroken raven-hued clouds.

I wandered without the slightest
Breath of hope as the ground shook
And snuffed away beneath my wary feet,
Cascading into the molten abyss,
From where all life began,
And closing the circle.

Around me, crowds of broken people
Despaired at the unforeseen end;
The lunatics ran rampant through
Arkham,
While the children curled up
On the streets in the pouring rain
And wept for Neverland… forever lost.

Then there I was, awash in shame,
Staring down at bloodied, bone-bare
Knuckles… my badge of rejected honor
After a moment of weakness,
And wondering if we
Deserved this horror in obsidian and fire…
Did we reap what we had sown?

And yet… as flesh melted from my limbs,
The sun broke on a raw
February morning and I found myself
Not standing at the end of all things,
But walking a continuing, sign-less journey
To the middle…
…happy birthday to me.

Don't Do It

Don’t Do It

It’s done; it’s over… he threw the game.
His play, the only one he could think of,
Was made in shivering desperation
And reeked of pungent finality.

In five days’ time, they followed their noses
And found him naked, cold, and bloated.

He ended his plot in this cosmic tale
But so hasty, was he, to close the book,
That I fear he skipped the epilogue.

For those loved, abandoned few who remained
Were human wreckage in his wake.
Left to pick up the pieces; to wonder why…

They picked apart the final years;
They told themselves it was all their fault.

They should have done it differently…
The signs were there; they should have known…
Should have reached out… Should have saved him…

He, who was all but unsavable;
So unready to stand and save himself.
Lacking courage; absent of hope…
Their efforts would have gone to waste.

He made his choice; a choice others face…
Take a breath; think it through;
Consider the world outside of yourself.

Don’t needlessly shorten your own tale
For there are no rewrites.
